Fire at Ramanathapuram Medical College Hospital: Patients Evacuated Safely
On Wednesday night, a fire broke out in the panel room on the second floor of Government Ramanathapuram Medical College Hospital, leading to a swift evacuation of patients. The fire, triggered by an electrical short circuit, filled the building with smoke, affecting multiple floors. Fire and Rescue Services personnel promptly extinguished the flames, but the lingering smoke prompted hospital staff to act quickly to ensure patient safety.
Patients were relocated from the affected second, third, and fourth floors, with those in critical condition, including two ICU patients, moved to the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) unit. Staff used wheelchairs and beds to ensure a safe evacuation.
District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon visited the site and confirmed the fire alarm and sprinkler systems were activated in time, preventing further escalation. Firefighters efficiently dispersed the remaining smoke after extinguishing the fire.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and the swift response of hospital staff and emergency services minimized risks. The district administration has assured further investigation into the incident to prevent recurrence.
This incident highlights the importance of efficient emergency protocols in healthcare settings and serves as a reminder of the critical need for regular safety audits in public facilities.
