India Bids Farewell to Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s 13th prime minister and the first Sikh to hold the office, passed away on Thursday night at AIIMS, New Delhi, at the age of 92. A seasoned economist and statesman, Singh led the Congress-led UPA government from 2004 to 2014, leaving a profound legacy in India’s political and economic history.
The Union Home Ministry announced that Singh’s last rites will be conducted with State honours at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday, December 28, at 11:45am. His mortal remains will be kept at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters from 8:30am for public homage, with the final journey to the cremation ground beginning at 9:30am.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, along with leaders from across the political spectrum, visited Singh’s residence in Delhi on Friday to pay their respects. Tributes also poured in from world leaders, including those from the US, Canada, France, and Sri Lanka, underscoring his global impact.
Dr. Singh retired from public life after the Congress's 2014 electoral defeat but continued to serve as a Rajya Sabha member, making his last appearance in August 2023. Renowned for his humility and intellect, he was instrumental in liberalizing India’s economy in the 1990s as the Finance Minister and later steering India through challenging times as prime minister.
As the nation mourns the loss of this visionary leader, his contributions to India’s development and his dignified leadership will be remembered for generations.
