India Condemns Vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Historic Residence in Dhaka
India on Thursday strongly condemned the vandalism and destruction of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka, calling the act “regrettable.”
Responding to media queries regarding the attack, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on February 5, 2025.”
Jaiswal further emphasized that those who cherish Bangladesh’s freedom struggle understand the deep significance of this residence in shaping the country’s national consciousness. He called for a strong condemnation of the act, highlighting its impact on the pride and identity of Bangladesh.
According to reports by the Dhaka Tribune, a mob stormed the historic residence in Dhanmondi-32 on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction. Visuals from the site showed flames engulfing parts of the building. Protesters, reportedly demanding a ban on the ruling Awami League, broke into the premises after forcing open the main gate.
Local media linked the violent protest to an online speech delivered by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Social media posts had earlier called for a “Bulldozer Procession” towards Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence if Hasina went ahead with her address.
By 10:45 PM (local time), an excavator was brought in an apparent attempt to demolish the house. Protesters, who had gathered in large numbers around 8 PM, stormed the premises and began damaging the property. Reports indicate that many demonstrators climbed to the second floor, using hammers, crowbars, and wooden planks to destroy portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and damage key sections of the residence.
The violent attack on the historic site has sparked strong reactions from various quarters, with many expressing concern over the security of Bangladesh’s national heritage. The incident marks a significant escalation of political tensions in the country, drawing international attention and condemnation.
The vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence, a landmark associated with Bangladesh’s independence struggle, has been widely criticized. Authorities are expected to take necessary actions to address the situation and prevent further attacks on such historical and symbolic sites.
