India Developing Its Own Large Language Model Under Public-Private Partnership
India is building its own large language model through a public-private partnership (PPP) approach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at the AI Action Summit in Paris. The PPP model is designed to pool resources, such as computing power, and make them accessible to startups and researchers at an affordable cost.
"India is developing a large language model that reflects our diversity. Our unique public-private partnership model allows resource sharing, ensuring startups and researchers can leverage advanced AI affordably. India is also ready to share its expertise to ensure AI serves the greater good," PM Modi stated.
Co-chairing the summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi emphasized that, despite rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, machines will never surpass human intelligence. "As we enter the AI era, concerns about machines overpowering humans arise. However, the future of AI should be guided by human responsibility," he added.
He highlighted India's success in building a digital public infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people, mentioning initiatives such as the UPI network. "India’s digital public infrastructure is open and accessible, helping modernize the economy, reform governance, and transform lives," he said. The data from these initiatives is crucial for India's National AI Mission.
PM Modi also noted that India took a leadership role in AI discussions during its G20 presidency. "We achieved a global consensus on AI, making India a leader in AI adoption and data privacy regulations. Our country also boasts one of the largest AI talent pools and is actively developing AI applications for the public good," he remarked.
During his visit to France, PM Modi will also tour the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a key global initiative in nuclear fusion research. Additionally, he will visit the Mazargues War Cemetery to pay homage to Indian soldiers who fought in the World Wars.
Following his engagements in France, PM Modi will travel to the United States for a two-day visit at the invitation of US President Donald Trump.
