India Pushes for Safe Return of Nationals Serving in Russian Military
India has confirmed that 12 of its nationals serving in the Russian military have died in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with another 16 classified as missing by Russian authorities. Of the 126 Indians who joined the Russian armed forces, 96 have been discharged and returned home, leaving 18 still serving.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the government is in contact with Russian authorities and the families of those missing. Efforts are underway to determine their whereabouts and expedite the repatriation process for those still in service.
The situation came to light recently after the death of Binil TB, a native of Thrissur, Kerala, who was killed in the conflict. His family publicly confirmed the news, making him the 10th Indian casualty in the war. The Indian embassy in Moscow is coordinating with Russian authorities to return his body to India. Another Kerala resident, injured while serving, is receiving medical treatment in a Moscow hospital, with the embassy ensuring his well-being and working toward his safe return.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns about the discharge of Indian nationals with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July 2024. By October, 85 Indians had been discharged from the Russian military, with efforts continuing to secure the release of the remaining 20.
The Russian Ministry of Defence stopped recruiting foreign nationals, including Indians, in April 2024, a move welcomed by Indian officials. Both countries are now working closely to expedite the identification, discharge, and repatriation of Indian nationals who voluntarily joined the Russian military but now wish to return home.
The MEA has strongly urged Moscow to prioritize the safe return of the missing and remaining nationals. The issue has also been raised with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi.
The loss of 12 lives and the uncertainty surrounding 16 missing individuals highlight the human cost of the conflict and underline the importance of diplomatic efforts. India continues to press for swift action to ensure the safety and return of its citizens.
