: India’s First Glass Bridge Opens in Kanniyakumari, Redefining Tourism
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated India’s first-ever glass bridge in Kanniyakumari, connecting the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the iconic 133-foot Thiruvalluvar statue. The Rs 37-crore project, part of a tourism enhancement initiative, coincided with the silver jubilee of the Thiruvalluvar statue’s unveiling by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Spanning 77 meters in length and 10 meters in width, the bowstring-arch bridge offers visitors breathtaking views of the sea through its transparent glass surface. Previously reliant on ferry services, tourists can now enjoy a scenic walk, improving accessibility and enhancing the travel experience. Designed with advanced technology to endure harsh marine conditions, the bridge symbolizes Tamil Nadu’s blend of heritage and modern engineering.
The bridge not only reduces travel time between landmarks but also stands as a testament to the region's commitment to developing tourism. It enhances Kanniyakumari’s appeal as a global tourist destination while celebrating Tamil culture and architecture. Public Works Minister EV Velu acknowledged challenges faced during construction due to rough seas, emphasizing the dedication of the teams involved in completing the project successfully.
This architectural marvel is set to become a landmark attraction, drawing domestic and international tourists, while bolstering local tourism and associated industries.
