Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto Joins India’s 76th Republic Day Celebrations

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest, highlighting the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between India and Indonesia. During a banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu, Subianto shared a light-hearted moment, revealing that a recent DNA test indicated he has Indian ancestry. "When I hear Indian music, I start dancing. It must be part of my Indian genes," he joked, eliciting laughter from dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Subianto’s remarks underscored the enduring civilisational links between the two nations. He noted the strong influence of ancient Indian culture on Indonesia, particularly through Sanskrit, which continues to shape Indonesian language and traditions. He expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation and uplifting marginalised communities. "Your commitment to help the weakest part of your society is an inspiration for us," Subianto stated.



President Murmu, in her welcome speech, emphasized the millennia-old ties between India and Indonesia, citing shared values of pluralism, inclusiveness, and the rule of law. She highlighted the historical significance of maritime journeys like Odisha’s ‘Bali Jatra’, which commemorates ancient trade links between the two regions. Murmu also recognized Indonesia’s pivotal role in India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Indo-Pacific Vision.

The Republic Day celebrations were marked by vibrant cultural displays and a ceremonial parade at Kartavya Path, where a 190-member band from the Indonesian Military Academy, Genderang Suling Canka Lokananta, participated. The Indonesian delegation’s rendition of the Bollywood classic ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ added a lively touch to the festivities.

Subianto expressed his hope for continued cooperation and friendship between the two countries, stating, "I wish the people of India prosperity, peace, and greatness in the coming years. I hope Indonesia and India continue to be close partners and friends."

The visit and celebrations underscored the mutual respect and shared heritage between the two nations, reinforcing their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and fostering cultural exchange.
