Madras High Court Intervenes in Anna University Sexual Assault Case
The Madras High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the recent sexual assault of a 19-year-old student on the Anna University campus in Chennai. A division bench comprising Justices SM Subramaniam and V Lakshminarayanan has directed the Tamil Nadu government and police to file a detailed report on the case, addressing lapses in the investigation and ensuring student safety. The court's action follows public outrage, protests outside Anna University, and demands for a CBI probe. Advocate R Varalakshmi highlighted critical lapses, including the leak of the FIR that exposed the survivor's identity. The FIR also revealed inconsistencies in the investigation, with only one suspect arrested despite the survivor mentioning two individuals. Another advocate, Krishnamurthy, stressed the need for systemic reforms to improve hostel safety for women in educational institutions.
Respondents, including the State Chief Secretary, DGP, Chennai Police Commissioner, Anna University's Vice-Chancellor, and the Inspector of Kotturpuram All Women Police Station, have been directed to submit their responses. The court has sought updates on investigative progress and broader measures to ensure campus safety.
The matter has been adjourned to December 28, where further proceedings will determine the next steps. The case highlights the urgent need for better student protection mechanisms and accountability in handling sensitive investigations.
