MS Dhoni Returns as CSK Captain After Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Injury Rules Him Out of IPL 2025

In a major development for Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni is set to return as captain for the remainder of IPL 2025 after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an elbow fracture. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news on April 10, ahead of the team’s upcoming home clash against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Gaikwad, 28, sustained a blow to his elbow during the March 30 fixture against Rajasthan Royals, when he was struck by a delivery from Tushar Deshpande. Despite playing the next two matches, recent scans revealed a fracture, ending his campaign prematurely. “He’s been operating in pain. The MRI confirmed a fracture, so sadly, he’s out,” said Fleming.

With Gaikwad sidelined, Dhoni—now 43 years old—steps back into a role that’s almost synonymous with his name. He will be leading the side for the 236th time in the IPL, having previously guided CSK to five titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023) and two Champions League T20 trophies. His return to the captaincy comes at a critical juncture: CSK have won just one out of their first five matches and are currently ninth in the 10-team standings.

Dhoni last captained CSK in 2023 when he led the franchise to a title. He handed over leadership to Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024 as part of a long-term transition plan. While he continued to support Gaikwad from the background, Dhoni emphasized that the young skipper made his own decisions. “He was making 99% of the calls—bowling changes, field placements. I just helped him out when needed,” Dhoni said.

Fleming added that Dhoni had no hesitation in taking over again given the team’s situation. “He understands what the team needs. Ruturaj didn’t want to step down, but with the injury, MS had to step in,” said the coach.

Dhoni also reflected on the evolution of T20 cricket, noting how the modern game demands improvisation and adaptability. “You have to stay relevant. Batsmen today are playing reverse scoops against pacers—it’s a different game from when we started,” he observed.

CSK will now hope that the return of their legendary leader can spark a revival in a difficult season.
