PM Modi and President Trump Discuss Trade, Tariffs, and Bilateral Ties in Washington

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump in Washington for the first time since Trump began his second term. PM Modi is one of the first global leaders to visit the US following Trump’s electoral victory. The two leaders engaged in bilateral talks at the White House, focusing on trade, tariffs, and immigration. Before the meeting, they exchanged greetings and praised each other’s leadership. “I appreciate how President Trump always keeps his country first. I do the same," said PM Modi, to which Trump responded, "He is doing a great job in India, and we will continue to build on our ties."

During the press conference, the leaders addressed various issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the crisis in Bangladesh. Trump denied US involvement in Bangladesh and stated he was leaving the matter to PM Modi. Modi reiterated India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that India is not neutral but rather on the side of peace. He recalled telling Russian President Vladimir Putin that “this is not the era for war” and encouraged diplomatic solutions.

Trade was a key agenda item, with Trump announcing reciprocal tariffs on all nations, stating that the US would impose the same tariff rates that other countries apply to its exports. He singled out India as one of the highest tariff-imposing nations. Just before the bilateral meeting, Trump reaffirmed his stance on these tariffs, which could impact Indian exports to the US. PM Modi aimed to negotiate favorable trade deals, reduce tariffs, and expand the economic partnership between the two nations. The discussions also covered foreign investment, energy, defence, technology, and immigration policies.

This is PM Modi’s tenth visit to the US as prime minister and his fourth meeting with Trump as President. His first visit as prime minister was in 2014 during Barack Obama’s presidency, while President Joe Biden hosted him in 2024.

PM Modi’s US trip began with meetings at Blair House, where he met US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. He also met US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who had just taken her oath of office. Modi’s visit to the US follows a two-day trip to France, where he held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on AI and civil nuclear energy cooperation.
