Punjab Police Enhances Border Security with CCTV Surveillance and Cybercrime Initiatives
In a major step to strengthen security along the Indo-Pak border, the Punjab Police is set to install 2,300 CCTV cameras at 703 strategic locations from Pathankot to Fazilka. Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, announced this initiative on Monday while inaugurating key police infrastructure projects in Pathankot. The ₹45-crore project aims to enhance surveillance capabilities and strengthen the second line of defence against potential security threats.
Speaking at the event, DGP Yadav highlighted the importance of technology in modern policing. The newly established Cyber Crime Police Station, located on the second floor of Police Station Division-1 in Pathankot, is equipped with advanced technologies to tackle cybercrimes efficiently. Victims of online fraud can report incidents directly at the station or through the toll-free helpline 1930. The initiative is expected to enhance the Punjab Police’s ability to combat digital crimes swiftly.
Additionally, the upgraded Police Command and Control Centre was inaugurated to improve security in the border district. The centre is equipped with 344 high-definition cameras, including Auto Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras, ensuring real-time surveillance of critical entry and exit points. Another 357 cameras are being added to further strengthen the security infrastructure in the district.
Later, DGP Yadav chaired a joint meeting with officers from the Punjab Police, Army, and Border Security Force (BSF) at Police Station Narot Jaimal Singh. He stressed the importance of inter-agency coordination to dismantle the networks of terrorists, gangsters, and drug smugglers operating under ISI directives. He emphasized that intelligence sharing is critical in countering these threats effectively.
The DGP also commended the Pathankot Police for their proactive approach in addressing cross-border security challenges, including drone intrusions and terror-related activities. To encourage officers, he awarded DGP Commendation Discs and appreciation letters to outstanding Punjab Police and BSF personnel for their exemplary service.
During his visit, he participated in the ‘Bada Khana’ lunch organized by the Pathankot Police, providing an opportunity for officers to interact and discuss ideas with the state’s top police official. The event aimed to foster stronger teamwork and collaboration within law enforcement agencies.
Concluding his visit, DGP Yadav inspected security arrangements at the BSF’s Shaheed Kamaljeet Singh Border Outpost, where he interacted with deployed security personnel. The visit underscored Punjab Police’s commitment to enhancing border security and strengthening cooperation among key security agencies.
