Sanjay Roy Convicted in Kolkata's RG Kar Doctor Rape-Murder Case
Kolkata court has convicted 33-year-old Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer, for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The gruesome incident, which occurred on the night of August 8 last year, sparked nationwide outrage, protests, and demands for justice.
The victim, referred to as ‘Abhaya’ in media reports, was found dead in the hospital's seminar hall. Her death triggered widespread protests across Bengal, drawing parallels to the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya case. Sanjay Roy was convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rape, murder, and causing death.
The trial, conducted in-camera, involved statements from over 50 witnesses and evidence collected by the CBI after concerns about tampering were raised. Sanjay Roy initially confessed to the crime but later claimed innocence, alleging he was being framed. His contradictory statements were dismissed by the court, which will announce his sentence on Monday.
The case also implicated RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and a local police officer, Abhijit Mondal, for evidence tampering. Both were later released on default bail due to procedural lapses by the CBI.
The victim's father expressed gratitude to the court for delivering justice, while the conviction brought hope to thousands of doctors who protested, demanding safer work environments and better infrastructure.
With the nation awaiting the sentencing, the case continues to highlight issues of workplace safety and justice for medical professionals.
