Shreya Ghoshal's X Account Hacked: Beware of Social Media Scams
Cybercriminals are exploiting verified X (formerly Twitter) handles with barely 10 to 15 followers to promote misleading posts about singer Shreya Ghoshal, aiming to lure unsuspecting users into online scams. Dr. Sandeep Mittal, Additional Director General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing, Tamil Nadu, raised this alarming issue in a social media post on Thursday.
Mittal’s warning highlighted the misuse of verified handles, stating, "Verified @X Handles, having 10 to 15 followers, promoting Shreya Ghoshal Ads are scam traps to lure public into cyber scams. Be alert, be safe……. @X should have a mechanism to detect and block such handles openly indulging in criminal activities.”
The issue gained traction after Shreya Ghoshal herself revealed on Instagram that her X account had been hacked since February 13th. Expressing her frustration, she wrote, "Hello fans and friends. My Twitter / X account is hacked since February 13th. I have tried everything in my capacity to reach out to the X team. But there has been no response beyond a few auto-generated responses."
Ghoshal also warned her followers not to engage with any links or messages posted from her compromised account, stating, "Please don’t click on any link or believe any message written from that account. They are all spams and phishing links." She assured fans that if she ever recovered her account, she would make a personal video announcement confirming its security.
The singer’s loyal fanbase took to Instagram to express their support. One user urged her to seek help from higher authorities, saying, "Didi, please try to reach out to the higher authorities. They will resolve the matter, just like they did before. That account holds years of love and memories! It’s an emotion for us. We miss you so much." Another fan wrote, "Hope we get back you soon there. We will wait for you there. Your Twitter SGFamily misses you so much. Many emotions are attached there. Hope you get back your account soon."
This incident highlights the growing threat of cyber scams on social media platforms. Users must stay cautious and report suspicious activities to prevent falling victim to such frauds. As cybercriminals continue to exploit social media vulnerabilities, platform administrators must enhance their security measures to protect users from potential cyber threats.
