Shreyas Iyer Appointed Punjab Kings Captain for IPL 2025

Shreyas Iyer has been named the captain of Punjab Kings for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The announcement comes after his stellar leadership in the 2024 season, where he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title. Following his release by KKR, Punjab Kings acquired Iyer for a record-breaking INR 26.75 Crore, making him the second most expensive buy of the auction.

Iyer, aged 30, has had a phenomenal year, winning four major domestic titles, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Ranji Trophy, and Irani Trophy with Mumbai, alongside his IPL triumph. He expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating his intention to bring Punjab Kings their maiden IPL title. Punjab’s best IPL performance was in 2014 when they finished as runners-up.


Reuniting with Coach Ricky Ponting, Iyer hopes to replicate their successful partnership that led Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final in 2020. Ponting praised Iyer’s leadership qualities and cricketing acumen, expressing confidence in the squad’s potential under his guidance.

Punjab Kings’ CEO Satish Menon revealed that Iyer was the franchise's top choice for captaincy, with his vision aligning perfectly with the team’s goals. Menon hopes that the Iyer-Ponting combination will lead Punjab Kings to a long-awaited championship.
