Strengthening Ties: European Commission’s Landmark Visit to India
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by the College of Commissioners, is set to visit India next week to bolster EU-India relations. The visit, one of the first by the College of Commissioners under the new mandate, underscores the growing momentum in strategic collaboration between Europe and India, according to the EU Delegation to India.
President von der Leyen’s visit is scheduled for February 27 and 28 in New Delhi, during which she will engage in high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit follows her earlier announcement of a new strategic agenda with India, which is expected to be unveiled at this year’s EU-India Summit. This agenda aims to reinforce partnerships in crucial areas essential for the prosperity and security of both regions.
During the visit, the College of Commissioners and the Indian government will participate in a plenary session chaired by President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Modi. Additionally, individual members of the College will meet their respective Indian counterparts to discuss sector-specific cooperation. The highlight of the visit will be a bilateral meeting between von der Leyen and Modi, followed by a joint press briefing.
Emphasizing the significance of the visit, von der Leyen stated that at a time of intense global competition, Europe remains committed to openness, partnership, and diplomatic outreach. She reiterated the deep-rooted ties between Europe and India, both being like-minded partners who firmly believe that democracy serves the people best. The EU’s decision to make India one of the first destinations for the new commission’s visit further signifies the strategic importance of the bilateral relationship.
“We are dedicated to enhancing our strategic partnership to drive trade, economic security, and resilient supply chains. Additionally, we aim to advance a common technology agenda and strengthen cooperation in security and defence,” von der Leyen affirmed.
This high-profile visit is expected to pave the way for stronger diplomatic, economic, and technological collaboration between India and the European Union, further solidifying their status as key global partners.
