Suryakumar Yadav to Lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 Opener as Hardik Pandya Serves One-Match Ban

Mumbai Indians will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 23, but without their regular captain, Hardik Pandya. Pandya will miss the high-voltage encounter due to a one-match suspension carried over from IPL 2024 after his third slow over-rate offence. As a result, star batsman Suryakumar Yadav will step in as the stand-in captain for the season opener.

Hardik Pandya’s Suspension Carries Over from Last Season

Hardik's suspension stems from Mumbai Indians’ final league match of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where the team failed to maintain the required over-rate. The repeated violations led to a one-match ban and a Rs 30 lakh fine for the skipper. The setback means MI will be without both Hardik and their key pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, who is recovering from an injury.

Responding to the suspension, Hardik admitted that he had not fully anticipated the long-term consequences. “Last year what occurred is part of the sport. We bowled the last over 1.5 or 2 minutes late. At that point, I didn't know the consequences,” he said. However, he accepted the ruling and left any potential rule changes to the higher authorities.

Suryakumar Yadav: The Right Choice as MI’s Stand-in Captain

With Hardik out, Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, will lead the five-time champions. Hardik backed the decision, calling Surya the perfect candidate for the role. “Surya, obviously, leads India as well. When I’m not there, he is the ideal choice in this format,” he said.

Although Surya led India to a 4-1 T20I series win against England recently, his personal form has been underwhelming, with only 38 runs across five matches. However, his aggressive playing style and leadership experience make him a fitting choice to take charge in Hardik’s absence.

Mumbai Indians’ Challenging Start to IPL 2025

Following their season opener against CSK, Mumbai Indians will face Hardik's former franchise, Gujarat Titans, in Ahmedabad on March 29. Their first home game at Wankhede Stadium will be against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 31, followed by matches against LSG in Lucknow (April 4) and RCB in Mumbai (April 7).

With Hardik set to return for the second match, MI will hope to overcome their tough opening fixtures and bounce back from their disappointing IPL 2024 campaign, where they finished at the bottom of the table with just four wins.
