The Hundred Teams Sale Begins: Oval Invincibles First on the Block
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will officially begin selling teams for The Hundred on Thursday, January 30, with Oval Invincibles, the Surrey county-managed London side, being the first to go up for auction. The sale has generated considerable anticipation, as both the ECB and financial firm Raine Group, overseeing the sale, gear up for a disinvestment drive that is expected to attract major investors.
Although there were expectations that several Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners would show interest, only four IPL franchises are still in the race, including Mumbai Indians, Lucknow SuperGiants, and SunRisers Hyderabad, with Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings having withdrawn. The sale will be conducted in phases, allowing investors to stay in the race even if they don’t secure a team in the initial round. The teams are likely to be sold through an e-auction or sealed bids, with each team having two or three contenders.
RIL-owned Mumbai Indians, along with a consortium of US tech giants, are potential bidders for Oval Invincibles. The Surrey-based county had initially hesitated to sell its share, but recent developments suggest that it is now open to parting with its stake. The ECB is offering a 49% share, with control passing to the new owner only if the county agrees to divest as well.
Following Oval Invincibles, the next teams up for sale include Birmingham Phoenix, London Spirit, Welsh Fire, and others. The process is expected to continue with competition heating up for the remaining franchises, with the Southern Brave team set for sale at the end of the first phase.
