Trump and Modi Discuss Immigration, Trade, and Global Cooperation
US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently had a productive phone conversation addressing key bilateral and global issues. This marked their first discussion since President Trump’s second-term inauguration. Topics ranged from immigration and trade to global security, technology, and defense.
President Trump emphasized the need for India to take back Indian immigrants who are in the US illegally, noting PM Modi's assurance of "doing what’s right." Reports suggest around 18,000 Indian migrants are residing illegally in the US. While Trump remains firm on addressing illegal immigration, he welcomed legal migration of skilled workers, an area where India plays a significant role through H-1B visa contributions.
The leaders also discussed deepening bilateral cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, the Middle East, and Europe. Trump highlighted the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made defense equipment and fostering a fair trade relationship. India’s surplus of $32 billion in the $118 billion two-way trade between the nations underscores its economic significance.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Quad alliance (India, US, Japan, and Australia), with India set to host a Quad leaders' summit this year. PM Modi expressed optimism about the partnership, calling Trump a “dear friend” and highlighting mutual goals for peace, prosperity, and security.
Modi is expected to visit the US in February to strengthen these ties further.
