Trump-Zelenskyy Clash in Oval Office Sparks Global Reactions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the United States took an unexpected turn when his meeting with US President Donald Trump resulted in a tense and heated exchange. Zelenskyy initially expressed gratitude toward the U.S., President Trump, Congress, and the American people for their continued support, emphasizing Ukraine’s need for a "just and lasting peace." However, the discussion quickly escalated into a confrontation, highlighting stark differences in their perspectives on the war and U.S. involvement.
During the Oval Office meeting, Trump strongly criticized Zelenskyy, stating that without U.S. military aid, the war in Ukraine would have ended in two weeks. He accused Zelenskyy of gambling with the lives of millions and suggested that Ukraine was in no position to dictate terms. Trump further asserted that the Ukrainian president was disrespecting the U.S. and that his continued reliance on American military assistance was an impediment to peace. Vice President JD Vance echoed Trump’s sentiments, calling Zelenskyy’s remarks inappropriate and arguing that he should not criticize an administration that has played a crucial role in preventing Ukraine’s destruction.
The meeting was initially set to conclude with the signing of a framework agreement on U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare minerals, a deal considered a strategic step toward strengthening bilateral relations. However, following the heated exchange, the signing was cancelled. A scheduled joint press conference and a planned lunch between the delegations were also scrapped. White House officials later confirmed that Zelenskyy and his team were asked to leave after the incident, with the Ukrainian president departing the West Wing two hours and twenty minutes after his arrival.
The altercation quickly became a global headline, sparking international reactions. European leaders, including Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, and French President Emmanuel Macron, voiced strong support for Ukraine. Macron reiterated that assisting Ukraine and sanctioning Russia were the right decisions, emphasizing that Russia remains the aggressor.
Following the confrontation, Zelenskyy took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank the U.S. and reaffirm Ukraine’s commitment to peace. Meanwhile, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that Zelenskyy was "not ready for peace" as long as U.S. involvement continued, adding that the Ukrainian leader could return when he was prepared for serious negotiations. The clash highlights growing divisions over U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s war and the broader debate on the future of U.S. foreign policy.
