Virat Kohli Set to End 12-Year Ranji Trophy Hiatus in Delhi’s Match Against Railways
Virat Kohli is set to make his much-awaited return to the Ranji Trophy after 12 years. The star batter will represent Delhi in their final league match against Railways, starting January 30. Kohli, who was unavailable for Delhi's match against Saurashtra due to neck stiffness, has confirmed his participation, according to sources within the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).
Kohli last played in the Ranji Trophy during the 2012-13 season, scoring 57 runs against Uttar Pradesh. In his 23 Ranji appearances, Kohli has amassed 1,574 runs at an impressive average of 50.77, including five centuries. His standout season was in 2009-10 when he scored 374 runs in three matches at an average of 93.50.
A defining moment in Kohli’s domestic career occurred in 2006 when, during a match against Karnataka, he lost his father overnight but returned the next day to score 90 crucial runs for Delhi. This incident cemented Kohli’s reputation for resilience and dedication to cricket.
Recently, Kohli has faced criticism for his inconsistent form in Test cricket, particularly during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. Despite scoring a century in the Perth Test, Kohli managed only 190 runs in five matches and was repeatedly dismissed chasing deliveries outside the off stump. The BCCI has since mandated that contracted players participate in domestic cricket to regain form and address technical flaws.
Kohli’s return to the Ranji Trophy comes alongside other Indian stars like Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill, who are also expected to play in domestic matches. These games provide an opportunity for players to gain form and confidence ahead of key international fixtures, including the ICC Champions Trophy next month and a Test series against England in June.
Fans are eager to see Kohli back in action, hoping his return to domestic cricket reignites the form that has made him one of the modern greats.
