Understanding Parts of Speech

Parts of Speech –  “Parts of Speech” refers to words that perform different functions in a 

                                 sentence.

              

 


1.      Noun – A Noun is a word that refers to the name of a person, thing, or place in a 

sentence.

e.g.,  a.  Raju is my close friend.

  b.  This is Sathya’s pencil.

  c.  We live in Chennai.

2.  Pronoun –  A word used in place of a noun is called a Pronoun.  It is used to avoid       

repetition and make sentences clearer. Pronouns can be singular or plural.

e.g.,    a. John is absent, because he is ill.

          b. Esther was my classmate.  She is now in New Delhi.

          c.  A dog jumped to cross the fence, but it failed. 

    

3Adjective -   It is a word that says something more about a noun.

      e.g.,  a.  Esther is a beautiful girl.

               b.  He is a strict officer.

               c.  Ravi is an intelligent student.

 

4.  Verb – A word that shows an action or state of being in a sentence is called a “verb”.

e.g.,  a.   We help each other.

  b.  This fort is in a ruined condition.

  c.   The factory management is observing the situation.

 

5.      Adverb - It is a word that adds something to the meaning of the verb in a sentence, often

indicating how, when, where, or to what extent something happens.  

      e.g., a.  He drives the car speedily.

 b.  Ravi completes the task quickly.

 cThe patient was hurriedly taken to the hospital.

 

6.      Preposition – This is a word used before a noun or a pronoun that shows its relation   

to another word in the sentence.   

       e.g.,   a.  The monkey jumps from one tree to another tree easily.

                b.  There is an agreement between the workers and the management.

                c.  The thief broke into the house last night.

    

     7.  Conjunction -  A word that connects two or more words, phrases, clauses, or sentences is

     called a “Conjunction”.

                  e.g., a.  Alex and Frederick are good friends.

                          b. The baby is crying because it is so hungry.

                          c.  If we do good to others, God will help us.

 

                 8.  Interjection – It is a word used to show sudden feelings such as joy, sorrow, surprise, etc.,

                 e.g.,  a.  Hurrah!  We won the match.

                         b. Alas! The merchant lost everything.

                         c.  Ah! What a beautiful poem it is.
