Christopher Nolan’s Next Masterpiece: The Odyssey Comes to Life on IMAX

Christopher Nolan’s next project, The Odyssey, will be an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, announced Universal on December 23, 2024. This mythic action epic will be shot across the globe using cutting-edge IMAX film technology. It marks the first time the poem will be presented on IMAX screens, with the film set to release on July 17, 2026.

The Odyssey, a cornerstone of Western literature, narrates the perilous journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. The poem explores themes of heroism, loyalty, and cunning, featuring iconic episodes such as Odysseus' encounters with the Cyclops, the Sirens, and the witch Circe, leading to his reunion with his wife, Penelope.

While Nolan’s adaptation will be a notable reinterpretation, The Odyssey has inspired numerous works, including films like Ulysses (1954) and the 1997 miniseries The Odyssey. It has also influenced novels and films such as James Joyce’s Ulysses, Cold Mountain, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?

The star-studded cast for Nolan’s adaptation includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. The film is Nolan’s second collaboration with Universal, following the success of Oppenheimer. Production is set to begin early next year.
